Nematodes are the most numerous group of metazoa on Earth.  They are less than 1mm long. Being polifagus they are very important in a food chain. Till now more than 4000 species of nematodes parasitizing the higher plants have been described. 10% of the annual world agricultural production is damaged by nematodes. Some groups of phytoparasitic nematodes indirectly cause damage such as nero vectors and tobravirus vectors. Because of the specific way of living and unspecific symptoms of their bad effects, the damages done to agricultural crops are often attributed to other factors, mostly to abiotic factors. The control of these bad influences is a long, expensive and complicated process, which is the reason why preventive measures are extremely important.
During the project, genotype characterization of phytoparasitic nematodes will be done on the area of Lijevče field. Morphometric and genotype identification will be carried out at the Genetic Resources Institute in Banja Luka in cooperation with the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research, Merelbeke in Belgium. The first identification will be done by morphologic and taxonomic methods, and final results will be confirmed by genotype identification.
The results of this project will serve as the basis for the assessment of risk level of harmful effects of nematodes and the assessment will serve as the basis for further researches aimed at the prevention and reducing of harmful effects. Knowledge of nematode community can define soil ecological state as well as the fact that some groups are suitable biological agents for the control of other pests and the identification of them would be significant in the project area.
