Genotype Characterists of Hazel (Corylus avelana L.) Fertilization in the Ecological Conditions of the Banja Luka Region

Knowing the process of pollination and fertilization in commercially interesting genotypes in given environmental conditions is the basis for designing the varietal composition for the optimal function of the realization of bearing potential in hazel orchards. Lack of knowledge of these processes as well as genotype characteristics under given environmental conditions of cultivation are the main reason for not having the hazel as fruit culture in this area.

The research goal is a histocytological study of: the dynamics of ovarian meristem differentiation in mixed female buds, the emersion of the thread-like stigmas at the top of the bud, anthers dusting, the formation of spermatic quiescent structure in ovarian meristems, ovule differentiation, the constitution of embryon sacs capable of fertilization, and the development of embryos within defined genotypes.

One of the key contributions of the project is a scientific training of young researchers with expert knowledge and ability to develop economically sustainable production of hazelnuts in the Republic of Srpska, as well as to form a genotype database for genetic studies and hazel selection.
