Gene Bank
The Plant Gene Bank of the Republic of Srpska is placed in the Center for Biodiversity, with seed collection and field collection.In the seed collection are stored accessions of cereals, vegetables, fodder, industrial and medicinal and aromatic plants, while field collection includes accessions of fruit stored in collections in Botanical gardens and in orchard in Čajniče.
Seed Gene Bank
Autochthonous species are an important part of the Republic of Srpska national identity, they were created by our ancestors and they are the result of centuries-old effort. The seed is a gift of nature, past generations and cultures. Our commitment is to seed as such protect and hand over to future generations. The seeds must be kept in conditions in which as much as possible stay viable. Currently, in long-term storage is placed about 1000 accessions. Seed gene bank collections are regularly enriched with new samples.
Field gene bank
Collection orchard in Botanical garden, University of Banja Luka
Gene Bank also has a field collection of autochthonous fruit trees located in the Botanical Garden of the University of Banja Luka. In the field collection in the Botanical Garden it is planted 237 trees of autochtonous fruit trees, of which 62 varieties of apples, 43 varieties of pears, 6 varieties of plums, 6 varieties of cherries and two apricot varieties.
Collection orchard in Čajniče
In cooperation with the municipality of Čajniče and local associations of farmers is established afield collection of autochthonous varieties of fruit trees in the area of Čajniče. In total is planted 205 trees (41 varieties), of which 130 seedlings of apples (26 varieties) and 75 pear seedlings (15 varieties).
