Towards the Preservation of Autochthonous Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Varietis in WBC (Vitis-WBC), SEE-ERA.NET Plus

Project in cooperation with: the Biotechnical Faculty of University of Ljubljana - the project coordinator; the Faculty of Agriculture of University of Novi Sad and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences of University “Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje (project partners)

Coordinators: Prof Dr Branka Javornik and Lidija Tomić, MSc

Implementation Time: 2011 – 2012

All around the world and in the countries of the Western Balkans as well, there is a process of a rapid losing of grapevine germplasm due to intensive cultivation of small numbers of commercial cultivars. Although there are thousands of grapevines cultivars in the world which have been made for hundreds and thousands of years, only a small number of commercial cultivars dominate in the world viticultural areas. Hence, the preservation of autochthonous grapevine cultivars is extremely important for making new cultivars by crossing and also for the preservation of the varieties for future generations. By this project, the molecular characterization of autochthonous grapevine cultivars (varieties) with the ones from the countries of the Western Balkans will be done and in it will be the first step towards the identification of these cultivars which will further lead to establishing links between individual varieties. The main objective of the project is genetic characterization of collected cultivars with the use of molecular markers which will enable DNA typing system for Vitis. These data will be compared to Vitis web database.
