Unlike traditional energy planning, renewable energy sources directs energy planning from centralized, national projects to local communities with energy projects of regional and local importance. Using biomass is offering a possibility of achieving positive socio-economic effects, and positive effects for the environment.

Waste, residues from agriculture and energy crops are agricultural sources of biomass that are used for energy purposes. The main forms of biomass exploitation are the production of biogas, biodiesel and bioethanol. Biogas can be used to generate electricity and heat, as well as for the production of biomethane that can be used as fuel or injected into the natural gas network. Biodiesel and bioethanol are used as fuel for motor vehicles. They can be used as a clean fuel, but due to technical reasons, mostly they are mixed in fossil fuels. Woody biomass, such as residues from horticulture, is primarily used for the production of electricity and heat.
Project ABCDE Posavina (Agricultural Biomass Cross-border Development of Energy in Posavina) is carried out in the framework of cross-border program Croatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina 2007 - 2013. The project will involve the Energy Institute Hrvoje Pozar (EIHP) and the Genetic Resources Institute, the University of Banja Luka (IGR), as the project holders in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Vukovar-Srijem County, Brcko District and the municipalities Orasje, Odzak, Domaljevac-Samac, Samac as partners in the project. Implementation began on 1 March 2011 year, and the activities of the project will last 24 months.
The focus of the ABCDE Posavina project is to promote the agricultural biomass energy exploitation in Posavina. Target region includes Vukovar – Srijem County, District Brcko and municipalities Samac, Orasje, Odzak and Domaljevac-Samac.
The project has four specific objectives:
Ø Analysis of the potential for the use of agricultural biomass in the region
Ø Turn exploitation of agricultural biomass into regional / local development plans
Ø Training of farmers
Ø Promoting the use of biomass energy with respect to sustainable development
The primary target groups of the project are the regional and local governments, farmers, agricultural secondary schools in the region and the potential investors for whom will be prepared a variety of materials and organized workshops and promotional events.
The third six-month meeting of the ABCDE Posavina project partners will be held in Brcko, 3 of September 2012, starting at 10.30 hours.
