Agreement on Cooperation with the Nordic Gene Bank
Genetic Resources Institute, University of Banja Luka has been signed an Agreement on Cooperation on 01.07.2016. with the Nordic Gene Bank (NordGen) on behalf of the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food for the purpose of depositing the security seed collection in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norway). Material deposition will begin with the next opening of the Vault on 18.10.2016.
By signing this Agreement on Cooperation gene bank of the Institute of Genetic Resources acquires the right to deposit their security collection to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which will allows the Institute to fulfill one of the basic obligations of insurance of plant genetic resources for present and future generations.
The Norwegian Government has established Svalbard global seed vault in 2008 in order to ensure the protection and conservation of plant genetic resources. Global seed vault is located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Gene banks around the world send their samples of seeds in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in order to secure and safe long-term storage of materials in natural conditions of permanent ice. The vault hold the seeds of many tens of thousands of varieties of essential food crops such as beans, wheat and rice In total, the vault now holds seeds of more than 4000 plant species. These seed samples are duplicates of seed sample stores in national, regional and international gene banks.
