Forest Genetic Resources

Forest genetic resources include genetic variation of trees of potential or immediate value for the people. Forest genetic resources are present in thousands of species, ecotypes, populations and individuals  of forest trees on Earth. The value of each genome in nature is unique and invaluable. Vulnerability of forest genetic resources is  large and continuose. More than 99% of natural forests in Europe has changed or completely disappeared due to human activities. Habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as changes in the environment caused by air pollution and climate change are important anthropogenic threats.
Conservation of forest genetic resources is considered to be a series of activities and such a policy, which aims to ensure the continuation of life, evolution and availability of these resources for present and future generations (FAO).
Having in mind that Programmefor conservation of plant genetic resources of the Republic of Srpska did not cover forest genetic resources, during 2012-2013 it is compiled the Program for conservation of forest genetic resources, which was adopted by the Government of the Republic of Srpska.
